The amazing David is currently in rehearsals for his play here in Northampton, so he popped into our Northamptonshire photo studio to get some fresh head shots for his portfolio. Head shots should be updated periodically. Some agencies ask for ever 6 months for them to be updated but I tend to see clients asking me to photograph their new head shots every year. These type of images are what casting directors and such like look at so you gotta make sure they really sell you. Too animated and you come across goofy, but stern and you are too severe. I tend to capture my clients in conversation to pick up on their mannerisms. A variety also helps. Some mixed poses, emotions and boom, your perfect head shot.

David really knows how to work that camera and it was superb to capture him. I have my favourites below. What an awesome man he is.

What to wear for your head shot shoot

Getting these shots right is key. They are what gets your that audition, that booking so attention to detail is important.

  • You cant go wrong with traditional black. It is not distracting, clean lined, and neutral. But does it sell your best assets to be ‘neutral?’
  • Wearing colour can be amazing. Just be sure to think what best suits your skin tone, hair and eyes. Compliment. Lighter colours work well when layered under a darker colour jacket.
  • Modern or Periods style relies purely on the type of work you are aiming for. It can make the world of difference to have your hair styled a certain way.
  • Avoid too low necklines. V necks are good to elongate the neck, boat necks can make you look broader.
  • Hair should be clean and roots updated. Dont ideally get a hair cut too close to your shoot in case you dont like it.
